Joint post | Balfour showing off Amery

_{[It sure didn’t take long after Amery’s first post for the feed to come on again, this time showing a beaming face. Well, actually two faces, but Balfour was beaming, his arms wrapped around Amery’s shoulders from behind as he showed him the broadcasting device. He held it in one hand and grinned out to the public.]}

Hey everyone! I know I’ve mentioned him before, but this is my brother, Amery! Say hi!

_{[He nudges Amery, intent on his brother making a good impression among his new friends.]}

Hello.

[Amery doesn’t look nearly as happy about this as his brother does, but he’s dealing with it. If only because it’s Balfour.]

It seems my brother has been sharing stories about me in my absence.

Of course I have! You’re my brother!

_{[So obviously, Balfour would be telling tales. He adored and looked up to Amery, after all.]}

Anyway, I just wanted everyone to know who he was. Please treat him kindly!

_{[And that goes for you too, Amery.]}

Balfour, though I appreciate the gesture, I do believe I’ll be capable of dealing with people whether or not they decide to treat me kindly.

_{[Balfour sighs, looking at the man he’s draped over for a moment.]}

Amery--

_{[But whatever else he was going to say is lost. He kills the feed just as he begins that sentence. Privacy was a valued thing for Amery, after all. Balfour knew this.]}

That's good. I mean, that you care about him and you've got him here and all. Family is important. [He smiled.]

Which one of you is younger? My brother's twelve, but he's already a jounin. He's pretty cool. Really, really, really smart--but he's usually too busy to teach me things, even when he promised he would.

[There's a shade of a pout, but it's gone quickly.]

But he makes up for it. Sometimes.

I wouldn't exactly say we annoy each other, though he certainly does frustrate me at times.

[If only because Amery has his own expectations of Balfour, which are probably different than the things that Balfour himself thinks they are.]

That's not going to happen.

[Because he wasn't planning on going anywhere, and with how quiet things here seemed to be thus far, he doubted anything was going to happen to endanger either of them. Of course, it was always a possibility, and it didn't mean that he was going to lower his guard.

Of course, he still didn't quite believe that he had died to start with. He'd taken the information and pushed it to the back of his mind; either way there was no sense getting upset over it since he was currently alive and well.]

Don't worry so much.

_{[Balfour huffed out a laugh, but didn't remove his face from Amery's chest, nor did he allow his arms to loosen.]}

When have you known me to not worry?

_{[He always worried, always fretted over everything. That was how he was, and Amery knew that.]}

Aren't those the same thing?

I don't trust that. I can't.

_{[He looks at Reid sadly, then glances toward where Amery is. He's so scared, and it's clear. He wants to cling to them both.

Someone would pay for Amery's presence. He knew that.]}

Reid... I don't want to lose either one of you.

_{[He rubs his face, just realizing how hard this had to be for Dyme. It really couldn't be easy, with him rubbing it in his face like this.]}

Bastion. I'm sorry. I'll be quiet about it now. And 'family'... It depends on how you define that.

I'm younger than Amery, but he was pulled about four years before I was, so we're about the same age right now, with only one year between us.

_{[Too complicated? He's sorry.]}

Your brother sounds interesting, but a lot like mine. Amery taught me how to cook and how to defend myself.

_{[But not how to fight, and he really was a shitty hand-to-hand fighter.]}

Do you know if he's here? What's his name?

Hey, don't worry about it; I'm a big boy, I can handle it. If I was going to get my panties all twisted up about this I wouldn't have said anything in the first place.

[Really, he was genuinely happy for Balfour. He didn't want the guy to feel bad about gushing about his brother just because Dyme's brother still was, and probably always would be, dead.]

Well, the people that are there for you, at least. You know, the people you'd do anything for cause you love 'em that much.

Sometimes blood relatives are a giant pain in the ass, though. [He shrugged.]

Alright, alright; fine.

[Maybe it was just stupid to try and argue with Balfour over this.]

Well, I'm not going anywhere. You're not going to lose me.

Not quite. It's not as though he irritates me with any bad habits. [Alright, so there were a few, but not anything really worth mentioning.]

He's simply capable of so much more than I believe he thinks he is, and as an elder brother, that is what frustrates me.

[Balfour had a point there, and for just a moment, Amery allowed himself to smile. Raising a hand, he ran his fingers through Balfour's hair.]

It's not good for you to worry so much, though. Even if something were to happen, I think we're both quite capable of taking care of ourselves.

That is true.

_{[He laughs softly. Yeah, Dyme knew better than most just how much Balfour's blood relatives sucked, at least his parents. Still, it was nice to be able to talk about it without worrying too much.]}

Friends matter. A lot.

Good. I don't want to.

_{[But those reassurances were certainly not going to help too much, at least not until he managed to calm himself down. He didn't know how such a happy topic got twisted into such ugly superstitions and painful worrying...but it did.]}

I'll be home soon, but I'm not staying long. I want to stay with Amery for a couple days, okay?

_{[Subject change, anyone?]}

_{[Balfour peeked up at the hand in his hair, just in time to see that smile. He had gotten Amery to smile. Balfour beamed, hugging his brother tighter for it.

But then his mind went back to the subject at hand.]}

I know. I know you can take care of yourself, but...but if I lose you here, I'm never ever going to get to see you again. This is my last chance.

_{[Because, you know, Amery was dead.]}

[He saw the post and frowned and was so freakin' hesitant about answering it But alas. He did at last.]

Balfour, I'm sure Reid already told you.

[He's not going into more detail because he's not stupid. Reid would have seen this and jumped on it and been like 'Nope I don't like him' despite how it was pretty clear it was not Chase. It just seemed so strange.]

Yes. Chase. I know. But he's not.

_{[The words are quiet, carefully measured. Today had been an insane emotional rollercoaster, and Balfour wasn't sure how much more he could take.]}

It's Amery. It's my brother...

_{[Please don't make him go away, his expression said.]}

[Well, he recognized that voice.]

Who is Reid and what has he already told my brother?

I know it's not. I met him when he first got here, but it's an unnerving type of thing...

[He sighed, trying to make it clear he didn't mean harm to him]

I'm not gonna do anything to him, don't worry, Balfour, just... I want you to be careful even around your brother just in case because new people show up every day and you never know when your brother won't be your brother...

Friend of mine and your brothers, and that you look like someone from back where we're from that's dangerous.

[HE IS TREADING LIGHTLY.]

What sort of friend?

[He's curious, this is his baby brother they're talking about.]

And I do believe you're already told me about my resemblance to this person.

[Well, it was mentioned, at least.]

Best friend've mine, and- [Stops from saying anything because he's not gonna be stupid] As for kind of friend to your brother, that's a question for one of them. Probably your brother because the second Reid sees you, he'll be an idiot.

[Sighs]

I have, yeah.

[There was nothing but silence for a moment. You didn't have to say it, Caleb. Amery wasn't stupid either; he understood what wasn't said.]

Are they in a relationship?

[He let out a sigh before answering, figuring since he guessed on his own, for the most part, fighting it was stupid]

Yeah. And your brother's in good hands with Reid. He's reckless, but he won't let anything happen to Balfour.

[Because clearly someone has to clarify that before he meets Reid.]
