Rehearsal 1: [Text, from Astralfield]

[The text is written in long, loopy handwriting, and displays as a dark blue -- the color of the chalk he's using. Victor's not even close to figuring out the video function yet.]

I -- I don't even know what I'm doing. . . Apparently this chalkboard can be used to talk to other people? Like letters, only more -- instant? Oh dear, I'm so confused. . .

Is there anyone out there who can explain this to me? All I know is that I was in my room, preparing to draw, when suddenly I blacked out and then. . .

[And he just can't help asking the question that's been on his mind since he first woke up here.]

[Whoa -- moving pictures! Victor stares at his screen for a moment, then hesitantly writes back.]

I assume you're of the pillow district that mysteriously has the same name as the land overall?

Also how are you making your face appear?

I pressed some buttons.

If I can see your writing then maybe there's a switch or something that you can make videos too.

[Hey, if a pillow works, why not a chalkboard. He'll go with it.]

[This is basically Victor's reasoning too. He's got a magic chalkboard that lets him talk to other people -- why not magic pillows? He's seen weirder.]

[Cue the poking and the prodding. There isn't much luck from examining the chalkboard surface itself -- but on the frame he hits a button, and --

Well, Joe will suddenly see the face of a tall, pale young man with big eyes and black hair, looking rather puzzled. After a moment, he speaks.]

Well, something lit up, so -- hello? Can you, ah, see me?

[Traditional waving to the camera here.]

Hey, there you are!

[He grins, although there's a moment of puzzlement. Victor has an odd look. But then he did see a talking lion earlier.]

[It's probably the complete lack of color. ~~And the fact he's a Tim Burton character and thus just a bit oddly proportioned.~~ Victor smiles shyly.]

Hello then. . . Goodness, this is odd. We don't have anything like this where I'm from. When you want to talk to someone, you either send them a letter or meet with them face-to-face.

Where are you from?

Burtonsville, England. Well, that's where I was born, I'm currently -- ah, I was living in Whitechapel. . . And you?

Oh, I should introduce myself properly -- Victor Van Dort.

I'm Angry Joe.

[He says with more enthusiasm than anger.]

I'm from Texas.

But England has the internet, right? Unless you're in some very remote area or something.

[Angry Joe? Unusual nickname. . .but Victor was briefly acquainted with a skeleton called Bonejangles, so. . .]

[He frowns, confused.]

In-ter-net? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that term.

You must be from the moors or something. Out in the foggy places of England.

[Victor chuckles.]

No moors, but Burtonsville is rather isolated from the rest of the country. It generally takes a few years for anything new to really settle in for us.

[Then he frowns.]

But I've been living in Whitechapel for a while now, and that's in London. I'm sure I would have heard of anything new there. . .

This is weird.

But then so is a pillow phone.

Or a chalkboard that shows moving pictures of people.

Chalkboard? That's what you've got?

Yes -- it's what the Queen gave me when they decided on where I was to live.

[Which was -- kind of annoying, honestly. Victor is really growing to dislike others making his decisions for him. He let his parents get away with that crap for far too long, and now he's got to put up with it from a whole other world.]

You're not in Pillowland?

No, they told me I was going to "Astralfield." It's -- well, it's not pillows.

[It seems okay so far -- he's found himself a convenient bench to sit on -- but he would swear he saw some of the clouds making faces at him earlier.]

Maybe I should have a look around more.

Maybe? I'm more worried about what I'm to do about food and shelter. Nobody really answered any of my questions -- they just brought me to the King and Queen, then dropped me off here.

There should be some rooms free somewhere, shouldn't there? That's what I found.

Even if they did look like pillows.

I'll have to look around more then myself. I've just -- it's been something of a shock, landing here. . .

[Well, that's completely mad. And just makes him think of Wonderland again.]

Looks like everything is pillows. Mainly a lot of pink ones for some reason...

It's like being stuck in some pretty princess DS game.

[Victor has no idea what he's talking about, so he'll just shrug.]

I'm sure you'll find someplace acceptable eventually. With less pink.

[A disturbing thought comes to him then, and he shivers a little.]
