Rehearsal 5 (6/09): [Voice, from Astralfield]

[There's a hiss of static, and then Victor's voice comes on mid-sigh -- clearly he's turned his communicator on by accident.]

I've really got to get out of this habit of having depressing birthdays. . .especially when there's no Alice around to cheer me up. Of course, I don't even know if it's really -- wait, why is the light --

[There's a distinct pause, and then Victor speaks again, now sounding a little embarrassed.]

Ah, e-excuse that everyone, I just --

Well, I may as well own up to it. It's apparently my birthday today. I don't know if I'm actually a year older, given that I seem to have skipped over a few months when I arrived here from home, but. . .for simplicity's sake we'll say it's my birthday. And yes, I am feeling slightly blue. Missing home. I'm -- I'm sure you all understand.

[Another, slightly-anxious pause.]

I do hope I haven't upset anyone. I --

I just miss her. A lot.

[Victor's a little startled by the offer, but intrigued. He doesn't know how to cook (nor does he really have the tools to do so), so most of the time he's living off prepackaged food. The sound of a real meal out is tempting.]

That's very kind of you. . . I think I saw your advertisement for the establishment in question. The Blood Legacy, correct?

[Kaname does things for his own benefit. He always does. But it's never evident. The whole world was nothing but a big chess set in Kaname's eyes.]

That is correct. Though it won't be as lively, it'll be a nice place for you to spend your day.

[Victor's used to people doing things for their own benefit -- he just can't see Kaname's angle here. Unless this act of goodwill is intended as promotion. Even so, it is still free food.]

To be honest, it not being as lively at the moment is better for me. I've never done well with crowds.

[He can manage so long as he's not the center of attention, but he's happiest when the people are thin on the ground.]

[Sometimes there's really nothing of interest, but Kaname can see the potential in everyone. It may not be today, or in the immediate horizon, but Kaname finds a way to use someone to his benefit, even if it's more than a decade or century from now.]

You're more than welcome to visit my establishment then. I'll make sure to give you necessary privacy.

[Well, Victor will feel like he at least owes the man a favor. Kaname will be able to cash in on that if nothing else. Victor smiles at him.]

That's quite nice of you, really. I think a lunchtime visit wouldn't be amiss.

[He will certainly cash in when the opportunity arises.]

I do what I can.

Lunchtime sounds good. There are barely any customers that time, and I will make sure to stay up to give you a proper welcome.

[Oh -- Victor hadn't even thought about the fact that this fellow, running a vampire-themed night club and all, probably got most of his sleep in the day.]

It's very good of you, though I hope I won't be unduly depriving you of your rest. My father's in business too, so I know something about how time-consuming running one can be.

[He just smiled. He is a vampire after all, and kept odd hours. Though he can easily manage keeping himself up at daytime since he's powerful enough.]

It's fine. I've delegated most of the managerial duties to my little sister. I've hired 2 capable bouncers, a lovely service attendant, a bartender an accountant and a scientist. All I do is monitor everything.

Oh, I see.

[Not really on par with all the employees that his father had to manage, but then again, this guy's running a club, not a cannery. And Kaname certainly seems like he's doing well enough.]

Well, then, I suppose I'll see you around noon.

[His father may have a factory of his own, but the whole vampire society and hunter association were both managed skillfully by this pureblood king.]

I'll await your arrival.

[Fair enough, but Victor doesn't know that. He is rather impressed with Kaname's skill in setting up such a successful business so soon, though.]

All right -- until then.

[And sure enough, at noon Victor appears at the club, having made his way over through Astralfield. Crystalden's silver and shine still intimidates him a little, but he has the power of being an invited guest on his side this time to steady his nerves. He walks in, taking a good look around.]

Ah -- hello?

[It's something they can talk about at a later time.

Once Victor enters the night club, he'd notice that there are a few balloons on the counter, and a booth filled with flowers, pillows and stuffed creatures. In the middle, there's a cake designed as a butterfly.]

[Victor does a bit of a double take when his eyes find the booth. The balloons were a nice touch, he thought, but that -- that seems like a bit much, doesn't it? And how did this man know that -- well, all right, Victor did make another post earlier showing off his art. It wouldn't be too hard to deduce from his sketchbook he was fond of butterflies. Not so much stuffed animals, though Victor does have some fond memories of a toy dog and cat he had when he was small. . . Still, wow. He was definitely not expecting that.]

[Unfortunately, Victor was faced with the best stalker among the creatures of the night. He sends out his familiars and astral drops to monitor the activities of everyone, most especially none-NPCs. He enjoyed being on top of things, and always figuring out how to use people to his maximal advantage.

While Victor was admiring the view, he'd suddenly feel a light breeze behind him.] Do you like it?

[Which would seriously creep him out if he knew, so it's probably best he not find out about that for a while.

As it is, when Kaname suddenly speaks from behind him, Victor yelps and nearly jumps out of his skin.] Oh! I -- oh, um, y-yes. It's v-very nice. [Please do not sneak up on him like that.]

[It was something which he normally didn't discuss with others.

He just smiles at that reaction. It always amused him when people would react that way. He loves sneaking up on people though.]

So, shall we?

[Which is only good sense, of which Kaname must have plenty.

Well, if you keep doing that, you can expect a lot of that reaction out of Victor. He's jumpy when he's startled. And sometimes when he's not. He nods, getting himself back under control.]

Y-yes, thank you.

[Quite an abundance.

He should be careful when dealing with Victor then. He wouldn't want to kill Victor.]

I'm not sure what flavour you'd like, so I went with the usual.. Chocolate buttercreme

[Victor's not likely to drop over dead from it -- just jump and possibly get increasingly annoyed. Today, though, any annoyance is a bit short-circuited by the reveal of cake.]

Chocolate's just fine, thank you. I'm a great lover of chocolate.

[He moves a few animals and pillows around to make it a bit easier to sit.]

[Kaname rarely does a trick twice.]

I'm glad to hear that. [Kaname helps free some chairspace for Victor.]

Anyway, Happy Birthday.

[Well good.]

Thank you. [Victor sits down amidst the lot.] It really is kind of you to do this. My last birthday was a bit lacking.

[Except for Alice's present, but -- he's trying not to think about that.]

You deserve to be happy on your special day. Next time, I'd hope you be able to bring your friends to celebrate your birthday properly, if you don't mind. [He smiles at Victor. Being alone is something nobody deserves, at least in Kaname's mind.]

I'm still in the process of making friends here. [Though Terra surely counts by now. . .perhaps he'll bring a slice of cake her way.] Though I am pleased to find so many friendly people. That was a bit lacking where I was before as well.

It's certainly not easy to make friends is it?

Lacking?

[Victor shrugs a little.] Particularly not when you're a bit shy.

[He makes a face.] Before I found myself on Lochwell's streets, I was living in the absolute worst neighborhood in London -- Whitechapel. I don't know if you're familiar with it, but -- it's smelly, crime-ridden, and just all-around horrible.
